Friday Art Class – Refining the Gesture, Painting the Nude

This session we will be spent studying the dynamic nude. Working from a live model, we will begin by distilling the models movements into the principle forms that make up the figure. From these gestures, the class will refine the figure, observing the way cool and warm light play off the form.

The classes will begin with quick painted or drawn sketches and then move toward more finished studies wrapping the term up with several longer poses.

Be ready to use your paints boldly. Vivid color, strong contrast, dynamic compositions and an extra dose of passion will be required throughout the 8 week term. Cost: $290 + Model fee

Friday Art Class – 8 PAINTINGS, 8 WEEKS

Gabriel’s next 8-week session to start on Friday, May 6th, 2011

This session will focus on _the spring still life_. Working with fresh
fruits, flowers, and vegetables, we will each construct simple still lifes.
Each still life will be drawn and painted within the three hour session.
The focus will be on shaking off some of the winter doldrums and making
quick and deliberate paintings full of spring zest. Fire it up people.

Be ready to paint on the first day with a canvas or board (8 for the
session) in any size (8″ x 10″ to 14″ x 18″), and bring a fresh
fruit,vegetable, or flower that you will love. This will be a fast and
furious 8 weeks and you will be a better painter at the end of it.
Guaranteed.

As an added bonus for this term, I will be spewing forth any tidbits of
artistic gold I have gleaned from this years _Portrait Society of America_
conference in Atlanta.

This session will focus on the Art of the Portrait. Working from
references we will be exploring the construction of the face, with emphasis on form and values.

Be ready to paint on the first day with a canvas or board in any size (8″ x 10″ to 16″ x 20″), and 5 dynamic references of people to paint from.

This will be my last session until I return from the Portrait Society of America conference held in Atlanta this May.

Gabriel’s next 8-week session to start on Friday, January 7th, 2011

This session will focus on the art of the portrait. The session will consist of two classes of construction drawing and six classes of painting the portrait, with focus on construction of the facial anatomy, facial plains and values. Gabriel will provide demonstrations throughout the session.

There will be one model for the entire 8-weeks. A $40 model fee will be added to your session fee.

Additional supplies needed for this session: drawing paper, sketch pad board, art gum eraser, 2H and H pencils.

Gabriel’s next session to start on Friday, November 5th.

This Session will focus on Sargent’s five types of light and the limited color palette. Please be prepared with and 3-5 photo references for Gabriel to review for use in your own portrait painting, or continue on with you painting you have been working on in class. Photo references should be head-shots, (exciting ones that you will want to paint), (chest up) to be used for bust portraiture. The last half of the class you will be working on small still life’s approximately 3 – 4″ x 6″ paintings per class.

Color pallets to consider before next session:

Primary Color Palettes
Transparent red oxide, yellow ocher, or raw sienna, & ultra marine blue.
Vermilion, fire red, or cad. red light, yellow ocher (cad yellow light), & black.

Carolus Duran’s Palette (Sargent’s Teacher)
Black, emerald green, raw umber, cobalt blue, carmine lake, light red, yellow ocher.
Pre Mix – 2 values of: Light red & white. Cobalt blue & white. Black & raw umber.

The Figure in Oil Workshop

This workshop, with award-winning painter Gabriel Lipper, will begin by focusing on getting a solid start with attention paid to drawing and form of the model. Then, the instructor will move into application of values and colors on the form. Demo and lecture time will allow students to glean from Gabriel’s years of experience. Students will be instructed in the Alla Prima or Premier Coup (or direct) painting style, which allows the painter to stay constantly present with each brushstroke applied with the intention of letting it stand in the picture as part of the final statement. This workshop will allow for each student to work at their own pace and receive the instruction they need making it appropriate for painters of every skill level.

This Session will focus on the effect of various color palettes on the painted portrait. The first class will start with a discussion on finding your own creative voice through the use of color. Gabriel will do three painting demonstrations from life throughout the term. Students will be sketching the model and taking notes during the demos and painting from your references the rest of the time.. Gabriel’s next session to start on Friday, July 9th.
The ability to capture the personality or mood of a model in a painting takes expert precision, a mastery of painting techniques, and the ability to look beyond color and form to bring out a masterpiece. Gabriel will be teaching students to see as well as paint over an 8-week course this summer. Gabriel has been teaching oil painting for over 10 years and is now accepting new students for his July 9^th – Aug. 27^th session.This session we will focus on painting from life. We will be painting from models for the entire 8-weeks. We will have two 4-week poses, as well as painting and drawing demos. Please be prepared with a few primed canvases or boards for the first class, and be ready to paint!
