November 2, 2009

This Friday, October 30th was the start of the new Friday art class fall session. The session will be 7-weeks broken up into 2 sections. The first three weeks will focus on working from a portrait reference. The references will be of a solitary person with a focus on the face.
For the second section of the class we will be doing a portrait from a live model.

Sessions fill up quickly, and this terms has lots of new talent along with plenty of veteran painters. Can’t wait to see how everyone’s projects progress. We will keep you posted.

Workshop at Trium Winery

The beauty of the vineyards and hillsides was only briefly overshadowed by the wailing and gnashing of teeth on the first day of our workshop.  Wispy clouds floated by overhead, and the rolling hills below played tricks on our eyes disappearing into the purple shadows only to reappear moments later. Even the most level headed first day painter was vexed.  Lunch arrived, and the sandwiches and lemonade seemed to help.  As some of the concepts of value and depth started to take hold, morale improved.  By the second day, the group had its painting legs. Color and perspective abounded.  The scorching sun was merciless but my students were brave and sure.  Thin to thick, dark to light.  Contrasting values and forms diminishing into the distance.  There was some beautiful painting accomplished.  We’ll have to do it again.

Plein Air Painting in Ashland, Oregon

Plein Air Painting in Ashland, Oregon

Painting on location at the beautiful Trium Winery

Plein air, a French word, literally translates as ‘open air’, and is defined as painting or drawing done outside, in the open air. The equivalent term in Italian would be alfresco. These works were taken directly from nature, and infused with a feeling of the open air.

Workshop Description

Gabriel will instruct during this 2-day plein air painting workshop capturing the beautiful Southern Oregon landscape. The rolling hills and vineyards are a stunning setting to paint your masterpiece.  The workshops will cover the fundamental principles of painting and composition with a focus on creating a sense of depth in your work.  Drawing, value, and color, will be used to create paintings with a strong sense of design. On location demos and one on one instruction will help to clarify some of the more technical concepts. The workshop will be intensive for all skill levels and limited to 10 students to ensure individual attention.
