Seeing is more than just using our eyes. It’s about interpretation, understanding, and the stories we tell ourselves about what’s in front of us. Still life’s are great because we don’t care about getting a perfect likeness. The more we let go of getting a perfect likeness, the more alive the painting becomes.

How does a painting go from chaos to clarity?

It starts with nothing but movement, marks that don’t yet make sense, a figure waiting to emerge. There’s a point where it could fall apart completely, where it’s all just color and texture without direction.

But then, something shifts. Edges sharpen, light finds its place, and suddenly, there she is—both grounded and dissolving, caught in the tension between abstraction and form.

A strong foundation allows for greater freedom. In the first piece, I focused on structure, shapes, value relationships, and clarity of form. In the second, those same principles hold, but with a looser, more expressive approach. Abstraction isn’t a departure from realism; it’s an expansion of it. On Monday, We start my course Learning to See. We’ll explore how to build that foundation so as artists we can push those boundaries with confidence.
